Below is the analysis and the actual output of running the throughput test in https://github.com/gonzalop/mq, using examples/throughput/multiple_different_args.sh against a local Mochi MQTT server running on bare metal.

Note that Paho v3 lacks features and checks present in v5 clients, so it's not really comparing apples to apples, but it's a good reference.

The analysis is what Gemini thought of the output.

I really ❤️ the memory use + GC runs of mq, and the performance is not to shabby either.

MQTT Library Performance Analysis: mq vs paho_v3 vs paho_v5

Date: January 16, 2026 Data Source: results.txt (local Mochi MQTT server benchmark)

Executive Summary

mq is the superior choice for high-throughput and resource-constrained environments.

It consistently demonstrates the highest reliability (zero dropped messages), the lowest memory usage, and generally the highest throughput. While paho_v3 remains competitive in speed for QoS 1 and 2, mq outperforms both Paho versions significantly in stability and efficiency.

1. Reliability & Stability (QoS 0)

This is the most critical differentiator observed in the benchmark results.

• mq: 100% Reliability. It successfully delivered every single message in every test case, even under maximum load.
• paho_v5: Severe Message Loss. It frequently dropped messages at high loads.
  • Example: At 10KB payload size, it often dropped ~75% of messages.
  • Symptom: Frequent "Subscriber idle" warnings indicating timeouts.
• paho_v3: Moderate Message Loss. Better than v5, but still dropped messages during sustained high-throughput tests.
  • Example: At 1KB payload size, it dropped ~25% of messages.

2. Performance (Throughput & Rate)

QoS 0 (Fire & Forget)

• Winner: mq
• Detail: mq dominates this category, achieving the highest end-to-end rates and throughput.
  • Max Rate (small payload): ~379,000 msgs/sec
  • Max Throughput (large payload): ~569 MB/sec

QoS 1 (At Least Once)

• Winner: Tie (mq / paho_v3)
• Detail: mq and paho_v3 perform similarly, trading blows depending on worker count. Both are significantly faster than paho_v5.
  • Benchmark (4 workers, 20 bytes): paho_v3 (~73k/s) ≈ mq (~70k/s) > paho_v5 (~51k/s).

QoS 2 (Exactly Once)

• Winner: Tie (mq / paho_v3)
• Detail: Similar to QoS 1, mq and paho_v3 are very close. paho_v5 is consistently the slowest implementation.

3. Efficiency (Memory & GC)

mq is by far the most efficient library.

It generates significantly less garbage (Total Allocations) and triggers fewer Garbage Collection (GC) cycles than the Paho libraries.

Comparison: QoS 0, 1 Worker, 200,000 messages (20 bytes)

Note: paho_v5 consistently allocates 5x-10x more memory than mq for the same workload.

Conclusion

Based on the provided benchmark results:

1. Use mq if you need high performance, strict reliability (no message loss), or a low memory footprint.
2. Use paho_v3 if you strictly require the Paho standard/ecosystem but can accept potential message loss at very high loads.
3. Avoid paho_v5 for high-performance Go applications, as it exhibits significant overhead, lower throughput, and reliability issues under load compared to the alternatives.
