Confluence Wiki Markup Syntax Reference

Confluence Wiki Markup Syntax Reference

When I ask for content in Confluence Wiki Markup format, use the following syntax:

Headers

  • h1. for top-level heading
  • h2. for second-level heading
  • h3. for third-level heading
  • etc.

Example:

h1. Main Title
h1. Section Titles (yes, start top level section title at h1, not h2)
h2. Subsection Title

Text Formatting

  • *bold text* for bold
  • _italic text_ for italic
  • *_bold and italic_* for bold and italic

Tables

  • || for header cells
  • | for regular cells
  • \\ for line breaks within cells

Example:

|| Header 1 || Header 2 || Header 3 ||
| Cell content line 1\\Cell content line 2 | Another cell | Final cell |
| Row 2 content | More content | Last content |

Horizontal Rule

  • ---- (four dashes). Always preceed with \\ to insert a new line before the horizontal rule.

Lists

  • * for unordered lists
  • # for ordered lists
  • ** for nested unordered lists
  • ## for nested ordered lists

What to AVOID

1. Do NOT use brackets around bold text in tables

Wrong: *[Delivery]* (creates an empty link)
Correct: *Delivery*

2. Do NOT escape brackets

Wrong: \[text\]
Correct: [text] or just remove brackets

3. Do NOT use Markdown syntax

Wrong: ## Header or **bold**
Correct: h2. Header and *bold*

4. Do NOT use <br> for line breaks in tables

Wrong: Cell 1<br>Cell 2
Correct: Cell 1\\Cell 2
