Instructions for importing a Dreamhost mail drop into gmail

Using a Dreamhost mailbox from gmail

To those with mailboxes on Dreamhost, such as on our domain cindysworld.org, these instructions will be helpful in using your mailbox from gmail. If you are hosted on another domain, just replace cindysworld.org with your domain in the following instructions.

Changing your password

Every email user can log into https://mailboxes.dreamhost.com/ with their full email and current password. Once logged in, they can reset the password. If the user does not remember the current password, they must contact the account manager. For our domain cindysworld.org, that's me, Olivia.

Reading your email using the web interface

You can read your email directly using the web interface on dreamhost if you don't want to set up gmail. To log in to the mail app on the server, go to http://webmail.cindysworld.org/

Use your (full) email address and password to log in.

If you don't care about setting up gmail, that's all you need to do and you can ignore the rest of these instructions.

Setup on gmail

To make your mail get sucked in to gmail, use the following instructions. This is better than having the email forward to gmail, because it pulls the mail in faster. Forwarding is rate-limited by google and you compete with all the other dreamhost.com customers, especially during peak hours. You can also force the import on demand if you need something imported immediately.

If you change your password, you're going to have to go through this all again, so change your password before doing this.

Log in to gmail and then click on the gear icon in the upper right.
See all settings -> Account and Import
Check mail from other accounts: Add a mail account

You get a popup.

Email address: fill in your full mailbox address that you want to import.
Next
Import emails from my other account (POP3)
Next
Username: your full mailbox address that you want to import
Password: your mailbox password
POP Server: pop.dreamhost.com
Port: 995
Check the box "Always use a secure connection (SSL) when retrieving mail."
Add Account
Check if you want to be able to send as that email address (usually yes)
Next
Name: You natural name as you want it to appear in outgoing emails.
Treat as an alias: check if you want it to be treated as an alias for you (usually yes)
Next Step
SMTP Server: smtp.dreamhost.com
Port: 465
Username: Your full mailbox address again
Password: Your mailbox password again
Check "Secured connection using SSL"
Add Account

After that you will get a confirmation mail that you want to permit use of that email address for outgoing mail. It will arrive in your gmail box. Click the link in that email to permit that as an outgoing email.

If you want that email to appear by default as the "From" address in emails you send, do the following:

(In gmail)
Gear Icon > See all settings > accounts and Import
Send Mail As: select the email you want to make your default return address
