This guide is for people who have a Mac and just want a quick way to get the game files for OpenRCT2 and play the game.
If you compiled the game yourself, have Linux, or you know your way around a terminal and just want to know what to do, take a look at the Installation on Linux and macOS guide.
- Download OpenRCT2 from the main Downloads page.
- Unzip the downloaded file and drag OpenRCT2.app to your Applications folder.
OpenRCT2 needs the original RCT2 game files (and optionally RCT1) to function. Follow the instructions below based on where you got your copy of the game.
Note: Before you proceed, if you have access to a Windows PC, or a Bootcamp partition with Windows, it will be easiest to install the game on Windows and copy the game files to your Mac. And then you're done! If you do not have access to Windows, read on.
Steam can normally only download games for the platform it is running on, but you can force it to download RCT1/2 using the following method:
-
Make sure Steam is entirely closed
-
Open Terminal.app and copy and paste this line into it:
curl "https://gist.githubusercontent.com/mrysav/f40cf028631ec467d2893f74ce91c297/raw/cc1167e65d91ca8b497db50e4a90c30581e36280/appmanifest_285330.acf" > ~/Library/Application\ Support/Steam/steamapps/appmanifest_285330.acf -
(if you own RCT1) Copy and paste this line into the terminal:
curl "https://gist.githubusercontent.com/mrysav/f40cf028631ec467d2893f74ce91c297/raw/cc1167e65d91ca8b497db50e4a90c30581e36280/appmanifest_285310.acf" > ~/Library/Application\ Support/Steam/steamapps/appmanifest_285310.acf -
Open Steam and wait for games to download
-
Open the folder
/Users/[you]/Library/Application Support/Steam/steamapps/common. You can do this with the following command:open ~/Library/Application Support/Steam/steamapps/common -
Move the RCT2TTP and RCT1 folders somewhere else to use for OpenRCT2.
If you're curious about the method being used to download the games, you can find more here: dotfloat/steam-appmanifest.
Download the game installers from GoG.com (you will have to download them from the website, and not GOG Galaxy.) After you have the installers, you will need to install a WINE helper to run Windows executables.
You can download a prepackaged WINE helper for use with OpenRCT2 here.
If you don't want to run an executable downloaded from the Internet, you can create your own following the instructions here: http://wineskin.urgesoftware.com/tiki-index.php?page=How+can+I+make+a+general+use+Wine+wrapper+to+run+exe+files+from+Finder
- Right click the installer file and in the Open With... menu select "Other"
- Find the WINE helper you downloaded or made in Appendix A ("OpenRCT2 Helper.app.")
- Install the game (and any expansions) to somewhere on the C: drive. If you have the option, select a "Full" install and not a "Minimal" install.
- In Finder, find the "OpenRCT2 Helper.app" you downloaded and right click it, and select "Show Package Contents"
- Click "drive_c" and navigate to where you installed the game files.
- Move the game folder somewhere else on your computer to use with OpenRCT2.
