AspiriFriday Guest FAQ

Thank you for joining us for AspiriFriday - a YouTube series where we Aspireify your app live on stream! Currently, we stream to the dotnet YouTube channel.

Machine setup

We want this to be as similar to your actual dev environment as possible, but to minimize setup pains live, please make sure you have:

Joining the stream

Look out for a Streamyard link in your inbox about 15 min before the stream starts (5 min before the calendar event starts). The calendar event includes 10 min of tech check and setup time. Everything is done through Streamyard in the browser - no Teams, Zoom, etc needed.

  • Streamyard has a nice guest guide you can follow if this is your first time using it.
  • If you will be sharing your screen, you'll want to do that right away to make sure the permissions are set up, and then you can leave it shared. Nothing is put on the stream until one of the hosts adds it to the "stage" manually, and we will check with you verbally before doing so!
  • If you're on an ultrawide monitor, sharing your whole screen via Streamyard won't look good, and since the Aspire dashboard pops up in a browser you can't share only your editor. Instead, you can:
    • Use a second portable monitor for the content you're sharing (iPads work natively with a Mac and with 3p software for Windows)
    • Use a dev box that you size to 16:9 for the content you're sharing (and share the entire dev box instance as a window in Streamyard)
    • Or, make a browser window that is roughly 16:9, use Codespaces in the browser, and only share the browser window (the dashboard will open in a new tab in a codespace)
  • Once we make sure your mic, camera, and screen look good, we will ask you to set up a Live Share link so we can all code collaboratively. It also takes the pressure off of you having to type everything yourself!

Flow of the show

This show is super casual and unproduced. It is fully live - turn off your notifications and close your secret chats!

We go live at the top of the hour, but the first ~2 min of the stream are an intro video countdown in which everyone is muted and "backstage". Once the video ends, the "stage" will automatically show you and the hosts (usually Maddy, David, and Damian) on the stream. Maddy (or another host) will start by introducing the stream and the other hosts, and then ask you to briefly introduce yourself (just who you are and whatever you're comfortable with - where you're from, what you do, skepticisms)

We will ask some basic questions about your codebase, your dev workflow as it is today, and then ask if you're ready to share your screen before bringing it "on stage". Then we'll start Aspireifying!

We have 2 hours booked but we don't need to use the whole time. Once we've gotten things Aspireified we can wrap up the show. When the outro countdown video starts, you can leave the Streamyard right away.

Other tips & FAQs

  • You do NOT have to share a link to source code for your app, but you do have to share your screen (or have one of us share our screen with the codebase). Most of the Aspire work can happen in the app host (and thus not in your business logic) but we likely can't prevent showing all your source - especially if changes to the builder etc in your projects need to happen.
  • You are more than welcome to pitch your podcast, book, blog, whatever it is when you introduce yourself, and we are happy to link those things in the video!
  • The video will be automatically saved to the @dotnet YouTube as soon as the stream ends. If for whatever reason you need us to take it down, we can!

See you soon - thank you so much for joining AspiriFridays!
