Signed Chat and Chat Types

Signed chat

This gist intends on clearing up some of the misinformation surrounding signed chat/the reporting feature Mojang has added to Minecraft 1.19.1. Here you can find both technical information as well as a general explanation of how these work.

Profile keys

After joining a server, clients now send a profile key used for verifying a message's authenticity. This key and thus the whole signing process is optional, but by default, servers enforce secure profiles for clients to send chat messages. Whenever the player sends a chat message and has a key associated, the message will be signed using their own private key, which the server then verifies using the public key sent after join. Assuming signature, timestamp, and message contents line up, the message goes through.

On the other end, clients can also require all broadcasted player messages to be signed, disregarding the ones without sender verified signatures.

How to secure a Proxmox exposed host

When you look for tutorials on how to install Proxmox, it always stops after the initial installation - which is quite dangerous, since it leaves a Proxmox host being exposed to the internet while listening to Ports 22 and 8006.

Heck, there is not even any SSH-hardening covered - your SSH is typically set to default values, which means: Password-authentication with the root account is perfectly possible. While you can mitigate some of these things by harding SSH or by installing fail2ban (which we will do anyhow), the host still exposes ports 22 and 8006.

For a secure system, these ports (and actually, apart from one single port ANY ports) have to be disabled. The only acceptable management access to the system should either happen via a Jumpserver or - if not available - via a direct VPN-connection.

In this gist, you find all the required steps to secure your Proxmox exposed host. This gist should work for any Proxmox host with - say - Hetzner, OVH or other vendor

Spigot restart script issues and solution

⚠️ This guide is for self-managed servers. If you rented a server and got a website through which you manage your server - you are on so called shared-hosting and this guide won't work for you.

What is spigot restart script

Spigot added a feature allowing for server to automatically restart on crashes, as well as when authorized user executes /restart command.

How it works

Recommended Paper Anti-Xray settings by stonar96

General

Anti-Xray can be configured per world in the paper.yml configuration file. To understand how per world configuration works please read this first. Note that after changing any settings for Anti-Xray you have to restart your server. Executing the /reload command (you should never do this) won't apply the settings to worlds that are already loaded.

Tips and tricks for more formatting options in GitHub Markdown

Advanced Formatting in GitHub Markdown

GitHub Flavored Markdown lets you create useful documents in GitHub and GitHub Enterprise using .md files. Like other varieties of markdown, GitHub Markdown tries to be as readable as possible in its raw form, resulting in an intentionally limited set of formatting options. However, these options can feel restrictive when dealing with complex content.

Although GitHub Markdown strips out most HTML tags, here are a few tricks that can give you more flexibility when formatting your documents. These advanced formatting options can make your documents more useable, but they come at the expense of plain text readability, so use with caution.

Pushing your first project to github

1. Make sure git is tracking your project locally

Do you need a refresher on git? Go through Codecademy's git course.

  1. Using your terminal/command line, get inside the folder where your project files are kept: cd /path/to/my/codebase. → You cannot do this simply by opening the folder normally, you must do this with the command line/terminal.
→ Do you need a refresher on using your command line/terminal? I've compiled my favorite resources here.

  2. Check if git is already initialized: git status

Making xrandr modifications permanent with lightdm

Overview

xrandr is the easiest way to make a multiple display configuration work in Linux. Lightdm is my current display manager. This file explains how to make lightdm run an arbritrary script (in this case an xrandr script) on startup.

Here's the command we need:

Learn Lua quickly with this short yet comprehensive and friendly script. It's written as both an introduction and a quick reference. It's also a valid Lua script so you can verify that the code does what it says, and learn more by modifying and running this script in your Lua interpreter.
