Frequently Asked Questions about ESXi

VMware ESXi – Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Introduction

VMware ESXi is a bare-metal hypervisor used to virtualize servers and run multiple virtual machines on a single physical host. It is widely used in enterprise data centers due to its stability, performance, and integration with the VMware ecosystem. This FAQ covers common questions asked by administrators and engineers who are starting with or already using ESXi.

1. What is VMware ESXi?

VMware ESXi is a lightweight, bare-metal hypervisor installed directly on physical servers to provide powerful virtualization for compute, storage, and networking resources. As an integral part of the VMware vSphere platform, ESXi allows multiple virtual machines (VMs) to run on a single host, ensuring high isolation, performance, and security.

ESXi is designed with a minimalistic architecture to reduce system overhead and improve reliability. It leverages direct hardware interaction, intelligent resource scheduling, and advanced memory management techniques, including ballooning and transparent page sharing, enabling high VM density while maintaining stability.

ESXi supports a wide variety of guest operating systems, such as Windows, Linux, and BSD. Hosts can be managed individually using the ESXi Host Client or centrally via vCenter Server, which unlocks features like vMotion, High Availability (HA), and Distributed Resource Scheduler (DRS).
