Proof of Concept for Hetzner's "Heray" PoW Captcha

This is a proof of concept (PoC) for Hetzner's "Heray" Proof of Work (PoW) Captcha. Please note that this is neither functional nor the original code. It simply demonstrates how the system could work based on observed patterns and assumptions.

Overview

Hetzner's "Heray" PoW Captcha likely requires the client to solve a computational puzzle as a form of CAPTCHA, where a specific condition must be met for the challenge to be accepted. The solution involves generating a specific mainbytes value based on given uuid and hsum values.

OpenPGP SSH access with Yubikey and GnuPG

NB: This document describles a 'Old-School' way of using Yubikey with SSH

Modern OpenSSH has native support for FIDO Authentication. Its much simpler and should also be more stable with less moving parts. OpenSSH also now has support for signing arbitary files witch can be used as replacement of gnupg. Git also supports signing commits/tags with ssh keys.

Pros of FIDO

  • Simpler stack / less moving parts
  • Works directly with ssh, ssh-add and ssh-keygen on most computers
  • Simpler
  • Private key can never leave the FIDO device

Cons of FIDO

Signing someone's GPG key

This is a quick guide of the commands we use to sign someone's GPG key in a virtual key signing party.

Note: The steps cover only the technical aspects of signing someone's key. Before signing someone's key, you must verify their identity. This is usually done by showing government-issued ID and confirming the key's fingerprint

The commands will work for both GPG and GPG2.

I use Julian's key for the examples. His key id is 2AD3FAE3. You should substitute with the appropriate key id when running the commands.

Signing the key

  1. List the keys currently in your keyring: gpg --list-keys.

How to create an HTTPS certificate for localhost domains

This focuses on generating the certificates for loading local virtual hosts hosted on your computer, for development only.

Do not use self-signed certificates in production ! For online certificates, use Let's Encrypt instead (tutorial).

Chroot into Raspberry Pi ARMv7 Image with Qemu
# raspbian stretch lite on ubuntu

### You can write the raspbian image onto the sd card,
# boot the pi so it expands the fs, then plug back to your laptop/desktop
# and chroot to it with my script

# sudo ./chroot-to-pi.sh /dev/sdb
# I found it to be much less of a pain in the ass and more reliable
# than doing the kpartx thing
