Adjusting child processes for PHP-FPM (Nginx)

Adjusting child processes for PHP-FPM (Nginx)

When setting these options consider the following:

  • How long is your average request?
  • What is the maximum number of simultaneous visitors the site(s) get?
  • How much memory on average does each child process consume?

Determine if the max_children limit has been reached.

  • sudo grep max_children /var/log/php?.?-fpm.log.1 /var/log/php?.?-fpm.log

Local Kubernetes setup on macOS with minikube on VirtualBox and local Docker registry

Requirements

Minikube requires that VT-x/AMD-v virtualization is enabled in BIOS. To check that this is enabled on OSX / macOS run:

sysctl -a | grep machdep.cpu.features | grep VMX

If there's output, you're good!

Don't use VPN services.

Don't use VPN services.

No, seriously, don't. You're probably reading this because you've asked what VPN service to use, and this is the answer.

Note: The content in this post does not apply to using VPN for their intended purpose; that is, as a virtual private (internal) network. It only applies to using it as a glorified proxy, which is what every third-party "VPN provider" does.

  • A Turkish translation can be found here, contributed by agyild.
  • There's also this article about VPN services, which is honestly better written (and has more cat pictures!) than my article.

Recovery from nginx "Too many open files" error on Amazon AWS Linux

On Tue Oct 27, 2015, history.state.gov began buckling under load, intermittently issuing 500 errors. Nginx's error log was sprinkled with the following errors:

2015/10/27 21:48:36 [crit] 2475#0: accept4() failed (24: Too many open files)

2015/10/27 21:48:36 [alert] 2475#0: *7163915 socket() failed (24: Too many open files) while connecting to upstream...

An article at http://www.cyberciti.biz/faq/linux-unix-nginx-too-many-open-files/ provided directions that mostly worked. Below are the steps we followed. The steps that diverged from the article's directions are marked with an *.

  1. * Instead of using su to run ulimit on the nginx account, use ps aux | grep nginx to locate nginx's process IDs. Then query each process's file handle limits using cat /proc/pid/limits (where pid is the process id retrieved from ps). (Note: sudo may be necessary on your system for the cat command here, depending on your system.)
  2. Added fs.file-max = 70000 to /etc/sysctl.conf

Proposal: A Node.js penetration test framework

Proposal: Node.js penetration test framework

Hi guys! Since I started to write Bluebox-ng I've been tracking the different security projects I found written in Node.js. Now we've published the first stable version we think it's the right moment to speak among us (and, of course, everyone interested in it :).

Why?

  • I think we're rewriting the same stuff in our respective projects again and again. For example, almost any tool supports IPv6 because the functions we need are still not present in the Node core and the libraries I found (IMHO) were not enough.
  • There're different projects implementing exactly the same thing, ie: port scanners.
  • We're working in a too new environment, so we need to make it together.
