Extend Gitlab Access Tokens

Gitlab enforced token expiry limits to 365 days last year, and the time is now upon us.

They don't have an opt-out for this, and haven't provided a way to easily extend tokens in the web interface. They have also gated their credential management interface behind their Ultimate license.

This quickly thrown together script will allow you to add an extra year to all tokens that expire in the next 30 days. It will not reactivate tokens that have already expired.

Requires the python-gitlab module. Edit your self-hosted Gitlab instance details into the script and run it. It will dump out CSVs of all expiring tokens, and then dump out a list of commands you can paste into a gitlab-rails console session to extend the expiry date by another year. If you need them to be active for longer, change 1.year.from_now to the value of your choice, e.g. `10.years.fro

Tip

Use context.WithTimeout when you need to enforce timeouts on internal operations like database queries or HTTP calls, especially when you want to propagate cancellation signals through the call stack to prevent resource leaks or manage goroutines. It's ideal for fine-grained control within a handler. In contrast, use http.TimeoutHandler when you want a simple way to enforce a timeout on the entire HTTP handler response, particularly when you don’t control the handler logic or don’t need to cancel ongoing work—it only cuts off the response after the timeout but doesn’t stop the underlying processing.

Warning

Be careful when using http.TimeoutHander. If automatically applied to all handlers (as part of a middleware pipeline) then it will not work when it comes to a streaming endpoint (see the relevant Cloudflare article linked in the NOTE below).

Recovering deleted files in Ubuntu with ext4 filesystem

Recently, I deleted some files by mistake in a Ubuntu machine with an ext4 fs. These notes document the steps I took to get them back.

Important

• this procedure assumes that the partition that contained the deleted files is different from the root partition, as that was the scenario with which I had to deal (deleted files were in my home dir). The procedure needs that the partition that contained the files is unmounted, so if the deleted files were in the root partition, the process would be a bit different (e.g. storing the fs journal in a USB stick, using a live CD/USB to boot and issue the commands, etc.)
