spruce Guide: M3U Playlists

spruce Guide: M3U Playlists

spruce now has a menu script that allows you to generate M3U playlists to better organise your multi-disc games! This script supports discs named with the Redump (e.g. Metal Gear Solid (USA) (Disc 1).chd) and TOSEC (e.g. Shenmue v1.001 (2000)(Sega)(PAL)(M4)(Disc 1 of 4)[!].chd) naming conventions.

This feature will be available beginning with the release of spruce v3.2.0 "Dripline"

Generate M3U playlists

To generate M3U playlists for your multi-disc games, first go to a disc-based console through the Games menu; this script supports the following:

  • PlayStation
  • Dreamcast
  • Sega CD
  • Neo Geo CD
  • PC Engine CD-ROM

Press X to bring up the scripts menu and then go to Generate M3U playlists for multi-disc games, then press A to run the script: it shouldn't take any longer than about 10-15 seconds depending on the amount of multi-disc games you have.

The menu listings should be reset, your multi-disc games should now be condensed into a single listing per game, for example...

  • Metal Gear Solid (USA) (Disc 1)
  • Metal Gear Solid (USA) (Disc 2)

...becomes just Metal Gear Solid (USA) in the menus.

You can now launch your multi-disc games and RetroArch will by default use the first disc.

Swapping discs

To swap between discs within RetroArch...first access the RetroArch menu by pressing HOME and going to RetroArch. Then, within the Quick Menu go to Disc Control.

You should see Eject Disc and Load New Disc as options. We need to eject the disc before we can change to a new disc, so select Eject Disc.

You should now see Current Disc Index as an option: select it and you should see a list of all the discs within your M3U, allowing you to swap between them.

Select the disc you want to swap to and select Insert Disc. RetroArch should then close the virtual disc tray with the new disc inside.
