SSH Resident Key Guide

Initial checks

Start by checking that there aren't any previous ssh keys inside the FIDO2 authenticator of your YubiKey. You can check if they exist by running the command below:

nix shell nixpkgs#yubikey-manager -c ykman fido credentials list

If the command above outputs a string mentioning "ssh" or "openssh", then you have already got a key generated and store on your YubiKey.

Evaluating additional authentication factors

Before generating a new ssh key to store on your YubiKey you must consider which additional required authentication factors you want to use. Below you can see a table with the available factors and their corresponding command:

Configure sway as the window manager for NixOS with gdm as the display manager
{ config, pkgs, lib, ... }:
{
# This sway config is mostly based on https://nixos.wiki/wiki/Sway
# which integrates sway with systemd in the style described here
# https://github.com/swaywm/sway/wiki/Systemd-integration
# and the replies in https://github.com/NixOS/nixpkgs/issues/57602
# with some individual packages added/removed and using sddm as the display manager.
#
# Take care to start the correct target as described by the sway proejct wiki.

A setup guide to use a personal gpg key for ssh authentication

GPG - SSH setup

Generating the master key

Here we create the master key. We want only Certify capability: we use the master key only to create the subkeys, Sign - Encrypt - Authenticate capabilities will be assigned to the subkeys.

Run the following command to start the master key generation process. Select the set your own capabilities creation process (type 8)

  ▶ gpg --full-generate-key --expert

gpg (GnuPG) 2.2.9; Copyright (C) 2018 Free Software Foundation, Inc.

Copy Bitbucket repo to GitHub

Whenever possible, use GH's "Import repository" feature.

The import feature doesn't always work, though. In my experience, I tried to import a repo and it failed with a generic message. I had to contact GH support to ask for help. They told me my repo had a large file (>100MB), which couldn't be added to GH directly. I had to either remove the file or store it in GH LFS. In this case, one of the CLI methods below are needed:

CLI: Copy the master branch only (OK)
