Modulation

Carrier

$$ c(t) = A\cos(\omega_c t + \varphi_0) $$

AM signal (modulated)

$$ s_m(t) = Am(t)\cos(\omega_c t) $$

Sideband

A band of frequencies higher than or lower than the carrier frequency, that are the result of the modulation process.

Typical AM signal is double-sideband, single-sideband can be produced through filter.
