He was Professor of Philosophy and then a most cherished, principled and accomplished Dean of Social Sciences, then of Humanities and the Arts at CCNY while also teaching at the CUNY Graduate Center. His classes ranged over many areas of philosophy, but his central interests were in the philosophy and history of science. Among many other publications, he co-edited Isaac Newton's Trinity Notebook, an important early manuscript of Newton's. As Dean of Humanities, Martin navigated the division through one of the worst fiscal crises in CCNY's history, managing to strengthen it through far-seeing strategic initiatives, including the establishment of the K.D. Irani endowment in philosophy. Martin's distinguished accomplishments as a professor, writer, and administrator never took precedence over his evident humanity, which showed in his dealings with colleagues and friends, but was most apparent in his family. Deeply devoted to his wife Myrna, of more than fifty years who died in 2013, he was a warm, often funny and always present and supportive father to Mark and Tara.
