Enabling debug and getting root on LG webOS by modifying NVM

Warnings

What you do with this information is your own responsibility. If you brick your TV trying this, it's not my fault. You should probably have some electronics experience if you want to attempt this.

This is going to involve opening your TV and attaching wires to the pins of an integrated circuit. If you're not comfortable with that, this is not for you.

This document is a work in progress.

debugstatus

LG TVs since at least the era of NetCast and "Global Platform" (webOS predecessors) have had the notion of a debug level, generally called "debugstatus". There are three modes: DEBUG, EVENT, and RELEASE. TVs normally operate in RELEASE mode. DEBUG mode enables a variety of logging and other debugging features in webOS, including access to the bootloader console and debug menus via serial. EVENT is similar to DEBUG, although it may not enable as much logging and has other relatively minor differences.

Automatic Signing of DKMS-Generated Kernel Modules for Secure Boot

Automatic Signing of DKMS-Generated Kernel Modules for Secure Boot (Nvidia Driver on CentOS 8 as Example)

First I thank Nvidia for sponsoring the video card.

Secure Boot isn't exactly easy to configure to work with Linux and disabling it isn't really a good idea. Many modern Linux distributions provide the Microsoft-signed shim EFI binary to interpose between Secure Boot and the grub2 bootloader, making booting Linux easy enough if you only ever use kernels and drivers from the official repos. Still, enabling Secure Boot prevents the loading of kernel or modules without a proper digital signature. For example, the propriatary Nvidia GPU driver won't work, unless your distro really went to great lengths to distribute a signed version of the kernel module.

To make Secure Boot play nicely with the driver (i.e. to work at all), we can generate and import a Machine Owner Key (MOK)

Kill Plex Streams without Plex Pass

Inspiration

Inspiration from kill_stream.py but wihtout the need of Plex Pass.
Kill any transconding stream or paused for a long time.

Cons:

  • Client IP blocked for 2 minutes
  • Plex App could hang or crash
  • Can't send messagens to user
  • Requires root or sudo privileges

my $dhcpd_leases_path = '/var/run/dhcpd.leases';

IDRAC6 Virtual Console Launcher
Use this as an example on how to start the virtual console without the need of Java Web Start or accessing it from the web interface.
You can use the user and password that you use for the web interface.
You need an old JRE... I used 1.7.0_80 from the Server JRE package, also I have tested successfully 1.7.0_79 with MacOS.
You don't need to install it, just extract it or copy the files in "jre" folder.
Open the viewer.jnlp file that you get by launching the virtual console from the web interface with a text editor.
Note the urls to the jar files. Download the main jar file avctKVM.jar and the libs for your operating system and architecture.
Extract the dlls (.so Linux, .jnilib MacOS) from the jar libs.

Things to commit just before leaving your job
// Just before switching jobs:
// Add one of these.
// Preferably into the same commit where you do a large merge.
//
// This started as a tweet with a joke of "C++ pro-tip: #define private public",
// and then it quickly escalated into more and more evil suggestions.
// I've tried to capture interesting suggestions here.
