@Camsbury ok now I'm stumped- it's giving me the output of a list, but my sum_year_total should be returning an int

def sum_year_total(sums):
    total =0
    for i in sums:
        total +=i
    return total

def stairs_in_20(stairs):
    list =[]
    for i in stairs:
       list.append(sum(i))
    return list

def twenty_years(days):
    return 20*days

twenty_years(sum_year_total(stairs_in_20(stairs)))

I love the encapsulation of the functions.

Couple things:
i is typically used as shorthand for index, so it is misleading here to say for i in sums

Also list is a reserved word.
