Dear Chris Adams,
We are contacting you because you previously participated in a study on data centre sustainability (EUDCEAR) or you were suggested as potentially interested stakeholder for the topic. The findings of the previous study informed two technical reports which are available online (Report 1, Report 2) and helped identify key priorities for a sustainable data centre sector in the EU.
We are pleased to invite you to participate in the next phase of stakeholder consultation for a new study contracted by the European Commission Directorate-General for Energy (DG ENER). The study’s objective is to support the development of an EU regulation establishing Minimum Performance Standards for data centres, to improve their performance and contribute to the EU climate objectives. The study will be carried out by Viegand Maagoe, VHK and the Borderstep Institute.
Over the coming months, the consultation (including workshops, survey, interviews) will help us to:
- Confirm the key challenges and drivers affecting the sustainability performance of data centres in the EU.
- Discuss possible approaches for minimum performance standards, including performance indicators, thresholds, exemptions, and monitoring and reporting requirements.
- Assess the practical feasibility, costs, and potential impacts of different policy approaches.
- Ensure that differences across data centre types and sizes are properly considered, including SMEs, hyperscale, colocation, and enterprise facilities, as well as national and regional contexts.
Further information about the project and the consultation will be made available on the study website:https://energy.ec.europa.eu/resources/preparatory-studies/minimum-performance-standards-eu-data-centres_en.
To help us plan the stakeholder process, please complete this short survey: https://ec.europa.eu/eusurvey/runner/13a463ca-8672-c890-c64d-69750ce5f1b9. Participation is required if you wish to remain informed about further steps; otherwise, we will not contact you further.
Your participation is essential to ensure that the consultation reflects operational realities and draws on the experience and expertise of stakeholders across the sector. If you have any questions, or would like to nominate a colleague to participate on behalf of your organisation, please contact mpsdatacentre@viegandmaagoe.dk or reply directly to this email.
Thank you for your continued engagement. We look forward to your contribution.
Best regards,
